Southampton

Southampton is the largest city located in England. The city is situated 69 miles south-west of London and 15 miles west north-west of Portsmouth. Southampton is the main port and neighbouring city to the New Forest. The city has population of around 253,651. The city has several major employers that include the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University, Ordnance Survey, Southampton Airport, BBC South and Carnival UK. Hampshire Constabulary provides police services in the city.

Culture

The city has several museums. The SeaCity Museum located in the city was established in the year 2012. Southampton Boat Show is annually held in the month of September with the presence of over 600 exhibitors. It is run to rejoice Southampton's links with the sea. Mayflower Theatre is the largest theatre in the city with a capacity of 2300. It was opened in the year 1928.

There are numerous art galleries in the city. The Southampton City Art Gallery at the Civic Centre is very popular.

Economy

The city had around 120,305 jobs in March 2007 and people appealing job seeker's allowance were 3,570. Southampton is always been a port for cruise ship and the major employers in the city were docks. The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of the major employers in the city. Ordnance Survey is among the other main employers in the city. The Westquay Shopping Centre is Southampton's biggest retail centre and it is 35th-largest in the UK. It was opened in the month of September in the year 2000. The city has two shopping centres: the 1970s Eaststreet mall and the 1980s Bargate centre which are disused as they were not successful commercially.

Education

The higher education division of city is quite strong. Student population of The University of Southampton and Southampton Solent University collectively is more than 40,000. The University of Southampton was established in the year 1862. During 2016 -2017, the university had around 25,180 students. The university has seven campuses for teaching, and the major campus is situated in Highfield area of the city. Solent University is situated in the city, and it is a public university. The university has around 17000 students.

The Southampton City College offers further education to the students. The college provides a wide range of courses including hairdressing, art & design, performing arts, catering, engineering, construction, business studies, travel & tourism, marine technology and childcare. The city also has independent schools including St Mary's Independent School, King Edward VI School and the Gregg School.

Transport

Southampton Airport is the domestic airport, which is situated in the Borough of Eastleigh in Hampshire. In 2016, the airport managed around two million travellers. AGS Airports managed and owned this airport. It provides services to the United Kingdom and some European destinations. The city has a strong network of railway, and the Southampton Central railway station is a major station in the city and managed by the South Western Railway.
